Whole-Home Automation Integration

Scenes That Set the Mood

Control4 scenes bring your audio system to life as part of your smart home. "Good Morning" starts the news in the kitchen and gentle music in the bedroom. "Entertain" fills every zone with the party playlist and dims the Lutron lights. "Good Night" fades everything to silence. Your audio becomes part of your lifestyle — not something you have to manage.

  • Control4 scenes: "Good Morning," "Entertain," "Good Night," and custom presets
  • Lutron integration dims lights automatically when music mode activates
  • Scheduled automation — wake to music, wind down with ambient playlists
  • One-touch control from remotes, wall keypads, phones, or voice

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a whole-home audio system cost?
Whole-home audio costs depend on zone count, speaker tier, and whether you need outdoor coverage. A basic 4–6 zone Sonos system with in-ceiling speakers typically starts around $5,000–$12,000. Mid-range systems with 8–12 zones, outdoor audio, and Control4 integration run $15,000–$35,000. Reference-grade systems with 15–30+ zones, premium architectural speakers, landscape audio, and full automation integration can range from $40,000 to $80,000+. We provide detailed proposals after touring your home so you know exactly what to expect.
What's the difference between Sonos and traditional distributed audio?
Sonos is a wireless-first ecosystem — each zone gets its own amplifier (Sonos Amp) and streams audio over your WiFi network. Traditional distributed audio uses a centralized multi-channel amplifier with speaker wire run to each zone. Sonos is simpler to expand and update, offers an excellent app experience, and integrates with 100+ streaming services natively. Traditional systems can deliver higher wattage per channel and sometimes lower per-zone cost at scale. We often combine both approaches — Sonos for most zones with traditional amplification for large outdoor areas or dedicated listening rooms. We'll recommend the right approach for your home during consultation.
Can I add outdoor speakers to my existing system?
Yes — adding outdoor zones to an existing Sonos or Control4 system is one of our most common projects. We'll assess your current infrastructure, recommend coastal-rated outdoor speakers and subwoofers appropriate for your space, and integrate them seamlessly into your existing control system. If you already have Sonos, adding a Sonos Amp and weather-rated speakers creates a new outdoor zone that appears in your existing app instantly. For retrofit installations where running new wire isn't practical, we have wireless solutions that still deliver excellent outdoor sound quality.
How many audio zones do I need?
A zone is any area you want to control independently. Most homes benefit from 6–12 zones: kitchen, living room, master bedroom, master bath, dining room, patio, pool area, and a few additional bedrooms or office spaces. Larger homes or those with extensive outdoor entertaining areas may need 15–25+ zones. We help you prioritize zones based on where you actually spend time and listen to music. You don't have to wire every room — we'll identify the zones that deliver the most value and design a system that can expand over time.
Will in-ceiling speakers sound as good as freestanding?
With proper speaker selection, placement, and calibration — yes. Modern architectural speakers from Sonos Architectural (by Sonance), Episode, and similar brands deliver remarkable fidelity in a flush-mount form factor. The key is correct placement: we calculate speaker positions based on room dimensions, ceiling height, and listening areas to ensure even coverage and natural sound. Paired with proper amplification and Trueplay or manual calibration, in-ceiling speakers deliver an experience that most listeners find indistinguishable from — or preferable to — freestanding speakers, with the added benefit of zero visual clutter.
Can I control audio with my voice?
Absolutely. Sonos integrates natively with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri (via AirPlay 2). You can say "Alexa, play jazz in the kitchen" or "Hey Google, group the patio and living room" without touching your phone. Sonos voice control also works natively on select Sonos products. Control4 adds additional voice control capabilities through its own Alexa skill. We configure all voice integrations during installation so everything works out of the box from day one.
Do I need structured cabling for a Sonos system?
Sonos can operate entirely over WiFi, but we strongly recommend a wired Ethernet backbone for reliability — especially in larger homes or homes with many zones. Wiring at least one Sonos device per floor via Ethernet creates a dedicated SonosNet mesh that's more stable than WiFi alone. For in-ceiling speakers, you'll always need speaker wire from the Sonos Amp to each speaker pair. In new construction, we run both Ethernet and speaker wire during the rough-in phase. For retrofits, we assess existing infrastructure and find the most practical wiring approach for your specific home.
How long does whole-home audio installation take?
Most whole-home audio installations take 2–5 days depending on zone count and complexity. A straightforward 6–8 zone system with in-ceiling speakers and a Sonos backbone typically completes in 2–3 days. Larger systems with 15+ zones, outdoor audio, landscape speakers, and full Control4 integration may take 4–5 days. New construction pre-wire is typically done in a single day during the rough-in phase, with trim-out and commissioning after drywall. We provide detailed timelines during your proposal so you can plan accordingly.
