The Problem

Your AV Was State-of-the-Art. In 2009.

The receiver hums. The plasma drinks 600 watts every time someone leaves it on. Half the in-ceiling speakers stopped working years ago and the rest still work because no one's brave enough to touch them. The original remote is taped together. iPhones can't pair. The TV menu takes ten seconds to respond to a button press. None of it talks to your lighting, your shades, or each other. Modern AV is dramatically better - and dramatically simpler - than what's installed in your walls right now. We unwind the legacy mess, reuse the wiring that's still good, and give you a system that actually feels current.

Our Approach

Modernize What Matters.
Reuse What Still Works.

Three upgrade paths that bring legacy AV into the modern era - without ripping the house apart or replacing every cable in the wall.

Modern 4K OLED display retrofit
01

Retire Old Displays & AV Racks

The plasma, the bulb projector, the 7-year-old AVR with HDMI ports that no longer pass 4K - out. We swap dated displays for current OLED, MicroLED, or laser projection from Sony, Samsung, and LG, and replace tired receivers with modern Anthem, Marantz, and Denon units that handle 8K, eARC, Dolby Atmos, and HDR10+ properly.

02

Revive Whole-House Audio

If your in-ceiling speakers are dropouts and your "wireless" hubs are e-waste, we can usually re-use the existing speaker wire and bring it into a current Sonos, Sonance, or Triad backbone. Streaming-first sources, instant phone control, every zone consolidated under one app - and your favourite room finally working in winter again.

03

Replace Five Remotes With One System

Modern AV control is the single biggest upgrade most homeowners feel. We migrate from outdated programmable remotes (or no control at all) to Control4 with intuitive on-wall keypads, phone control, and integration into your lighting, shades, climate, and security. Three button presses become one. Confused guests become comfortable guests.

What an Upgrade Looks Like

Five Systems We Routinely Modernize. From the Wall to the App.

01
Home Theater Refresh

Refit the Theater Without Rebuilding the Room

Most legacy theaters fail because the gear in the rack - projector, AVR, sources - fell behind the picture standards in your living-room TV. We replace just the components that matter: a current Sony or JVC laser projector, a Marantz or Anthem AVR with full Atmos, and an updated source stack. Existing wiring, screen, and seating typically stay. The room transforms in a single weekend.

  • Swap aging bulb projectors for modern 4K laser (20,000+ hour lifespan)
  • Replace pre-2018 AVRs with units that handle 4K/120Hz, eARC, Dolby Atmos, HDR10+
  • Rebuild the source stack: Apple TV 4K, Kaleidescape, Roon, modern game consoles
  • Single-press Control4 "Watch Movie" scene replaces five separate remotes

02
Multi-Room Audio Replatform

Old Speaker Wire. New Brain.

The cable in your walls is almost always still good. What's outdated is everything it's connected to - the keypads, the matrix, the streaming source. We replatform to current Sonos Amp / Sonance DSP zones, layer in voice and phone control, and consolidate every dead-and-dying source under one app, one volume slider, one source picker.

  • Re-use existing 14/4 or 16/4 speaker wire wherever feasible
  • Sonos Amp, Sonance DSP, Episode, Triad - matched to your existing speakers
  • Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Roon, AirPlay 2 streaming integrated end-to-end
  • Per-zone control from phone, in-wall keypad, or voice - finally consistent

Video Distribution Modernization

One Source to Every TV in the House

If you've still got cable boxes scattered through the house, or HDMI splitters duct-taped behind the entertainment center, you're fighting yesterday's problem. A modern HDBaseT or AV-over-IP matrix puts one centralized rack of sources behind every TV - Apple TV, Kaleidescape, gaming, satellite - all selectable from any room, all in 4K HDR with no compression and no signal loss.

  • Replace HDMI matrices with HDBaseT or AV-over-IP capable of true 4K/60 4:4:4 HDR
  • Centralized rack: one Apple TV / cable box / streamer feeds the whole house
  • Re-terminate Cat6A or upgrade Cat5e where bandwidth has run out
  • Engineered equipment closet with cooling, surge protection, and monitoring

Outdoor & Patio Audio

Patio Speakers That Survive a Decade Outside

Most outdoor audio fails because consumer-grade speakers can't handle salt air, UV, and humidity. We replace failing patio and pool zones with marine-grade Sonance, Triad, and James Loudspeaker units rated for coastal South Carolina, plus dedicated outdoor amplification that doesn't degrade in summer heat.

  • Marine-grade speakers from Sonance, Triad, Episode, James Loudspeaker
  • Dedicated outdoor zones, separately controllable from indoor system
  • Subwoofers and pendant speakers tuned for outdoor reverberation
  • Amplification housed indoors with proper ventilation - not in a hot patio cabinet

Control & Automation

One Remote. One App. Done.

The single biggest "wow" of an AV upgrade isn't the picture or the sound - it's the control. We migrate aging Crestron, URC, Logitech Harmony, or no-control households onto Control4 OS 3, integrate Lutron lighting and shading, and add Apple TV / Sonos / streaming services into clean, intuitive scenes anyone in the house can use.

  • Control4 Gold-level installation with OS 3 - modern, fast, beautiful UI
  • Lutron Caséta, RA3, or HomeWorks integration depending on home scale
  • Phone, watch, in-wall keypads, voice (Alexa / Siri / Google) all unified
  • Scenes that combine AV, lighting, shades, climate, security in one tap

Why MK Technology for Upgrades

Upgrades Are Harder Than New Builds.
We Specialize in Them.

01

Reuse What's Still Good

Speaker wire that's still in spec, in-ceiling drivers that still measure flat, conduit and pathways already in the wall - we test what you have first and only replace what truly needs replacing. Most of our upgrade quotes come in well below a from-scratch install because of it.

Survey-First Approach
02

Live in Your House, Not Out of It

Most upgrades happen in occupied homes. We schedule in phases, dust-control rooms while we work, leave the kitchen and bedrooms running every night, and finish each space before moving on. Demo the rack on Monday, watch a movie in the new theater by Saturday.

Control4 Gold & Lutron Certified

The hardest part of any upgrade is making the new system feel like one cohesive whole - which is why we lead with Control4 OS 3 and Lutron lighting. As a Gold Dealer and Lutron-certified integrator, we deliver the unified, single-app experience that makes a 15-year-old house feel brand new.

No Subcontractors. Ever.

Every cable trace, rack rebuild, and calibration is done by our own technicians. The team that designs your upgrade is the team that walks into your house, and the team you call afterwards. Consistency, accountability, and one number to ring when you need us.

100% In-House Crew

Our 12-year-old theater finally feels new. They kept the screen, kept the seats, and rebuilt everything else around a new Sony laser projector. It looks better than my friend's brand-new build.

We had four dead audio zones for years. MKT replatformed everything to Sonos, kept all the original speaker wire, and we had music in every room again by Friday. Wish we'd called sooner.

The original Crestron install lasted twelve years. The Control4 migration MKT did took eight days. None of them come close to MKT - handles everything in-house, shows up when they say, and the system just works.

My old AVR died right before holiday guests arrived. I called MKT in a panic. Someone answered, someone showed up, and we had a brand-new Marantz running the theater within 24 hours.

Our office AV had been "not quite working" for years. MKT replaced the matrix, swapped the displays, and added wireless presentation. Now it's flawless in every meeting. A real upgrade - not a patch.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my AV system is worth upgrading vs. replacing entirely?
It almost always comes down to two things: the wiring and the speakers. If the in-wall speaker wire is in good condition (most pre-2015 installs are still serviceable) and your in-ceiling drivers still measure flat, we can usually re-platform the brain - receivers, matrices, sources, control - and keep what's behind the wall. We'll do a free site survey, test what's there, and tell you exactly what's worth keeping. The vast majority of our upgrade quotes save 30–50% versus a full from-scratch replacement.
Can you reuse my existing in-wall and in-ceiling speakers?
Yes, in most cases. Quality architectural speakers from Sonance, Triad, Episode, JBL, B&W, KEF, and similar brands routinely outlive the gear that powers them. We test each driver during the survey - if a tweeter or woofer has failed or the cabinet is compromised, we'll flag it. If they're still in spec, we keep them and rebuild the amplification, control, and source stack around them.
My system is on Crestron / URC / Logitech Harmony - can you migrate me to Control4?
Yes - this is one of our most common upgrades. Logitech Harmony is end-of-life, older URC systems are unsupported, and many 2010-era Crestron installs use modules that haven't been updated in a decade. We migrate cleanly to Control4 OS 3, integrate your existing displays and amplification where possible, and add Lutron lighting / shades into the same scenes. Most homes are off the legacy system in 5–10 days, with no downtime in the meantime.
My HDMI matrix doesn't pass 4K HDR. What are my options?
If your matrix is older than ~2018 it almost certainly can't pass true 4K/60 4:4:4 HDR or Dolby Vision. We replace these with current HDBaseT 3.0 matrices or AV-over-IP solutions like Just Add Power, which handle 4K HDR end-to-end with no compression and add features like easy scaling and remote management. We can usually re-use existing Cat6/Cat6A wiring if it was professionally terminated; older Cat5e gets replaced or supplemented with fiber where bandwidth has run out.
My old plasma / 65" LCD looks dim and "off." Should I replace it?
Almost certainly yes. Plasmas and early LCDs lose roughly 50% of their brightness over a decade and don't support modern HDR formats at all - so they actively look worse than a $700 modern TV from Costco, let alone what's possible from a current Sony or Samsung OLED. As part of an upgrade we replace dated displays with size-matched modern OLED, MicroLED, or laser projection, calibrated to the room with a colorimeter so colour and gamma are correct.
How long does an AV upgrade typically take?
For a single-room theater refresh, 2–4 days on site. For a whole-home replatform - multi-room audio, video distribution, control system migration - typically 1–2 weeks depending on scope and how much existing wiring is reusable. We work in phases so you're never without TV in the master bedroom or music in the kitchen for more than an evening. From signed proposal to first scene running on the new Control4 is usually 3–5 weeks including hardware lead time.
Will an upgrade make a real difference in property value?
Modern, working AV consistently shows up as a positive in luxury real-estate appraisals. The flip side is also true - outdated systems become a perceived liability, since buyers assume they'll have to rip everything out. Our estimates show the typical 3–6% uplift band for modern AV in a Lowcountry home, with confidence proportional to upgrade scope. We've also seen agents move homes to under-contract substantially faster when "fully integrated AV" is in the listing.
Which brands do you install?
For control: Control4 (we're a Gold Dealer), Lutron (certified), and we service existing Crestron and Savant systems. For audio: Sonos, Sonance, Triad, Episode, JBL Synthesis, James Loudspeaker, McIntosh, KEF. For displays and projection: Sony, Samsung, LG, JVC, Séura. For receivers and amplification: Anthem, Marantz, Denon, NAD. For sources and streaming: Apple TV 4K, Kaleidescape, Roon, Bluesound. For networking and video distribution: Araknis, Pakedge, Ruckus, and Just Add Power. We're brand-agnostic - we specify what's right for your specific home and existing infrastructure rather than carrying a single house brand.
